A newly discovered microbe, Sukunaarchaeum, possesses an unusually small genome that focuses primarily on replication, suggesting it may be evolving into a virus. Researchers believe this organism can provide insights into viral evolution and the transitions in evolutionary history that typically lack fossil evidence. Genetic analysis indicates that Sukunaarchaeum is part of a larger, previously unknown archaeal lineage found in global seawater samples.
