Bajaj Auto disclosed it fell victim to a ransomware attack on Tuesday morning. Systems at its Pune headquarters and those belonging to Bajaj Auto Technology Limited—its research and engineering arm—were hit. The company moved quickly, isolating affected networks and bringing in its in-house tech team alongside outside cybersecurity experts. So far, officials say their containment measures have worked and no ransom demand or data theft has been confirmed. The incident marks another cyber-security scare for India’s heavy industry. Earlier this week, Tata Electronics acknowledged a breach after an extortion group called World Leaks published what it claimed were internal documents. While Tata’s files haven’t been independently verified, World Leaks has a record of targeting manufacturers, healthcare providers, tech firms and energy companies across North America, Europe and India. There’s no evidence that Bajaj Auto’s breach links back to the same group. Bajaj Auto ranks among India’s top vehicle makers, churning out motorcycles, scooters and commercial vehicles. It also leads the world in three-wheeler production—those auto-rickshaws you see everywhere. Even giants aren’t immune to cyber threats, and this attack underlines the rising cost of digital security lapses in manufacturing.
