Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, two architects behind Google’s Gemini model, have just left Google for Anthropic, Bloomberg reports. Their exit follows a pattern: last week Noam Shazeer, who helped kick off Character.AI and spent more than two decades at Google, jumped ship to OpenAI. Google had spent $2.7 billion to acqui-hire Character.AI largely to lure Shazeer back, and now he’s gone again. Shortly after Shazeer’s departure, John Jumper, director of Google DeepMind and co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside Demis Hassabis, announced he’s heading to Anthropic too. Jumper’s work on AlphaFold transformed protein-structure prediction, making his move another significant loss for Google’s research arm. With both OpenAI and Anthropic gearing up for public offerings, top AI talent has fresh leverage. Equity stakes at these rivals could soon outshine what Google offers, and that financial carrot seems to be drawing leading researchers away—just when Google needs them most.
