Apple’s revamped Image Playground, unveiled at WWDC 2026 alongside macOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, moves beyond cartoonish, emoji-style outputs to true photorealism. The new generative model runs on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, so you can ask for scenes in any style and get lifelike results rather than flat illustrations or sketches. Editing tools now let you make adjustments in place—just describe what you want changed or tap, circle and brush directly on the image. That means you don’t have to start over when you want to tweak lighting, add objects or shift focus. Image Playground integrates into Messages like before, but you can also generate Lock Screen wallpapers, Contact Posters and other system graphics without leaving Apple’s ecosystem. Apple keeps its watermark policy intact: every AI-created or AI-edited image carries a hidden SynthID tag to prove it’s machine-made. Leslie Ikemoto, director of Input Experience, says this upgrade gives users powerful controls across platforms, from quick edits in Photos to full-blown image creation. The feature ships with the public releases of macOS 27, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.
