Rick Lenssen spent two years turning ASML’s extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machine—a $400 million device that prints the world’s most advanced computer chips—into a 2,636-piece Lego set. He and a small design team traveled to ASML’s labs in the Netherlands, photographed every angle of the real machine and rebuilt it virtually piece by piece. Their goal was accuracy: the final model stands 35 cm tall, comes with rotating mirrors and a detachable control panel, and pairs with a booklet showing how EUV lithography works.
ASML built just 100 of these Lego sets for an internal release last year, handing them out at corporate events and to key clients. Demand exploded once images leaked online. A public run of 46,061 kits sold out in minutes this spring at €239 each. Secondary-market prices have jumped north of €1,500. Lego says it’s the only time it’s ever invoked its manufacturer’s right to limit production for a single set.
Beyond its play value, this project highlights how rare and complex EUV machines are. Only ASML makes them, and each requires thousands of highly specialized parts sourced from dozens of suppliers. They enable the chips in your phone, car and data center. Now, thanks to one meticulous model builder, hobbyists can own the only everyday object that hints at the scale and precision behind the chips powering modern life.
