OpenAI’s latest investor memo paints Anthropic as falling well behind on compute power. According to the note, OpenAI plans to reach 30 gigawatts of compute capacity by 2030. Anthropic, by contrast, is expected to have just 7 to 8 gigawatts by the end of 2027. Even at the high end, OpenAI says its ramp-up is “materially ahead and widening,” underscoring a key battleground: raw processing scale.
Both firms now sit in the trillion-dollar club and are eyeing IPOs this year. Anthropic, launched in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei and other former OpenAI researchers, has carved out enterprise wins and just unveiled a new AI model under “Project Glasswing,” aimed at boosting corporate cybersecurity. OpenAI, which ignited the generative-AI craze with ChatGPT, argues that its ever-improving infrastructure and algorithms drive down cost per token and fuel “compounding advantage.” Better products, in its view, draw more users and revenue, then fund even more compute and R&D.
Anthropic didn’t stay silent. A spokesperson directed CNBC to its recent announcement alongside Google and Broadcom. CFO Krishna Rao said the company is making its “most significant compute commitment to date” to match the surging demand for its services.
